Shaniwar Wada in Pune is the capital of the Peshwas. It was built during the time of the first Bajirao. Later, this palace witnessed the success and laughter of the Peshwas. How Shaniwar Wada Was Built?

There is a legend about Shaniwarwada. Bajirao saw a rabbit chasing a big hound at that place. He was surprised. He built Bhuikot fort in that place. The foundation work of Shaniwarwada was started on January 10, 1830, while the construction of Shaniwarwada was completed on January 22, 1732.

Even after 1732, the castle continued to undergo new constructions and changes. The year 1760 dawned for the construction of the gate of the bastion. Records of small and large fires are found in the years 1808, 1821, 1813, while on 17 November 1817, the fort was marked by the British. Henry Dandas Robertson, the first Collector of Pune, lived here for some time after that.

The main entrance of Shaniwar Wada is known as Delhi Darwaza and other doors are known as Ganesh, Mastani, Jambhal, Khidki. There is a statue of the first Bajirao on horseback in front of Shaniwar Wada. Many places like Ganesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Arsa Mahal, Hastidant Mahal, Diwankhana and Karanje can be seen in Shaniwarwada. A light and music show telling the history of the Peshwas is held daily at Shaniwar Wada.

The Peshwa-ruled palace was destroyed by fire in 1928. All that is left now is the fortified walls of the palace and a strong gate with a pointed end for security.
