A lighter is a portable device that is used to ignite the flame. The best part about the lighters is that they can be carried to the remotest parts of the world. Wherever you go, you can take a lighter with yourself. Apart from igniting a flame of its own, a lighter is used to create flame/fire to several combustible materials such as candles, fireworks, CNG, petrol etc.

History of the lighters:

The invention of the lighters goes back to 1823, and the credit goes to a German Chemist Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner. Thus, at the initial stage, lighter was not called lighters, but they were named as “Dobereiner lamp”. They worked using hydrogen gas. Later on, as the time passes the design and the shape of the lighters went on changing, and now they come in different sizes and shapes and material.

Different types of lighters:

1. Naphtha Lighters: The oldest technology in the field of lighters. It uses a saturated cloth wick, a fiber packing and an enclosed top cover to ignite the flame in a controlled manner. The liquid of the Naphtha lighters is highly volatile and catches fire as soon as the top is opened.

2. Jet lighter: A jet lighter produces a blue flame that is sometimes invisible also, and the temperature of the fire is quite high when compared to Naptha Lighter. The flame is the result of the electric spark produced by such lighters. But it consumes a high amount of fuel, so it is not stable for long trips.

3. Electric Arc Lighter: In such lighters a spark is used to create plasma conduit between electrodes to ignite the flame. The spark which is produced gets into the contact of a flammable substance to ignite a fire.

4. Automobile lighter: An attached lighter in the motor vehicles is known as Automobile lighter. The lighter is given as an attachment in cars on the dashboard or in the well between front seats. The mechanism is similar to other lighters to ignite the fire. It was first invented by “Alexander Kucala”.

5. Match Lighter: A match lighter has a long flammable stick attached to it to generate fire. This is the reason why it is called the Match Lighter.

6. Flameless Lighter: A substitute to the traditional lighters and safe at the same time. Such lighters use glowing heating element which is enclosed so as not to produce an exposed flame. These are designed to use in an open environment where flamed lighters are challenging to use.
