Tailbone pain is that occurs at the very bottom of the spine that is known as the Coccyx. The function of the Coccyx is to support in sitting position. The pain in tailbone can be caused due to trauma or during vaginal childbirth or prolonged sitting, bowel movements, sexual intercourse etc.

The Coccyx may be fractured when a person falls on his or her buttocks also that for a woman, it may be broken during childbirth which is as a result of a complicated delivery.

The pain in tailbone that can be severe at times and uncomfortable too. The pain either goes away in a month or may not. It can be a symptom of a severe disease. If the pain does not go in a month, one must seek help from a qualified medical professional. The medical professional may go for physical examination X-ray to diagnose the cause of pain and to find out whether the tailbone is bruised or broken.

● Massage- massaging the muscles around the tailbone area.

● Exercise- one can go for exercises to ease the pain if the pain is chronic.

● One needs to avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces on his or her bullocks. Also, prevent lifting direct weight or leaning forward.

● Ice therapy- ice therapy is considered to reduce the tailbone pain area for about fifteen to twenty minutes to ease the pain for a few days until the pain is gone.

● Pain relief medications such as ibuprofen can also be consumed only if the doctor prescribes the same. The medicine is considered to reduce pain.

● A cushion with a doughnut shape can be used to ease the pain.

● One needs to eat fibre rich foods to avoid constipation which may not worsen the pain during bowel movements.

● Exercises such as Single leg knee hug, piriformis and glute cross leg stretch (thread the needle), kneeling psoas stretch, kneel and twist and Iliopsoas and gluteus time etc. can be done to ease the pain. Still, these exercises should be done in medical supervision only.
