For many women, getting their nails done is an easy way to feel pampered and professional. But if any one is pregnant or breastfeeding, she might wonder if it’s safe for her to go to a salon or not. It is because when a woman get pregnant, she suddenly become acutely paranoid of everything she used to do care-free before, and rightfully so.And that also includes pampering. Even her favourite makeup and cosmetics become questionable when she has a little one growing inside of her.

Can Pedicures induce labour?

There is a common belief that getting a pedicure can induce labour. In fact, if any one look around online, will see tons of people repeating this. Even can find lots of reflexology practitioners who advertise their services to help induce labour for desperate pregnant women. Many women completely believe that this treatment helped them and they really go for it. Though the fact is that there have been very few studies on this subject, and no one actually could find a single trustworthy source that says whether or not pedicures or acupressure can induce labour.

Risks of getting a Manicure/Pedicure When Pregnant

While pedicures/manicures safe during pregnancy to, there are a few risk factors that need to be paid attention to. These include:

• Hygiene risk: Since a salon sees quite a few visitors and the equipment and products used may carry infection if not cleaned and sterilized properly.

• Chemicals: Exposure to some certain chemicals like Toluene, Formaldehyde,Acetone can be harmful during pregnancy. Inhalation or accidental ingestion of these chemicals is the main concern.

• Lack of ventilation: If there is excess chemicals and fumes in salon room, lack of ventilation may cause nausea.

Stay safe while getting Manicure/Pedicure when Pregnant

Though most people seem to agree that they’re safe, still some precautions one need to follow for staying safe:

• Make sure the area is well-ventilated

• Don’t eat anything while at the salon

• Look online for the salon’s cleanliness record

• Before applying ask which chemicals are going to be used

• Bring own files and nail clippers

• Go first thing in the morning. This will insure the least chance of getting an infection, because everything should be freshly cleaned and ready to go for the first comer.

• Don’t go if anyone has broken skin on hands or feet.

• Don’t get a manicure/pedicure in the first trimester. If anyone is going to get one of these treatments done, at least wait until the second trimester to do so. The risk associated with the chemicals is higher in the first trimester than latter.

Most importantly of all, take advice from doctor beforehand. Pampering self with manicure and pedicure pregnancy stage may feel great and rightly so. While it is almost safe to indulge in some self-care, it is recommended that one need to keep all the pros and cons in mind and make an informed choice. Choose beauty products, salon, and procedures with care, then one can enjoy a blissful salon treatment, while her baby stays well and protected.
