Kerala is blessed with Best Bird Sanctuaries. It has 28 percent of forest cover. The Kerala Bird Sanctuaries are home to around 507 species of birds. And there are many places in Kerala seasonal haunts of migratory birds.

Some of the famous Bird Sanctuaries of Kerala are:

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:

Kumarakom bird sanctuary is the most popular bird-watching spots in Kerala. The slightly adventurous sanctuary that opens the door to a world of different varieties of birds. The sanctuary has a good scope for nature walking and photography. It is just 15 km from Kottayam and can be reached easily via bus or taxi. The nearest railway station is Kottayam and the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (94 km). Thattekad Bird Sanctuary:

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is Kerala’s first bird sanctuary. It is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar River. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is called is also called Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and is famous for its rich and varied birdlife. There are more than 500 species of birds in the sanctuary, along with a few wild animals like elephants, sloths, leopards, and other mammals. Best time to visit: The best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March.

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary:

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary. Mangalavanam is an ecologically sensitive area situated at Kochi. It is a nesting area for a large variety of migratory birds and supports many types of mangroves. The Managalavanam is usually regarded as the “green lung of Kochi,'' considering its role in keeping the city’s air pollution under check. An area is a roosting place for various kinds of resident and migratory birds. Mangalavanam is truly a bird refuge.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary:

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary situated in Malappuram, Kerala. Kadalundi is home for native as well as migratory birds. This sanctuary ground of islands in a spectacular area surrounded by hillocks where the Kadalundi river flows into the Arabian Sea. So many migratory birds, including whimbrels, herons, sandpipers, gulls, etc.can be seen between the months of November and April. If you are interested in spending time with a colorful variety of birds, make your tour between the months of December and April.
