In this article I am trying to make clear concept of Add file or files to a database in Visual SourceSafe.

You can add one or more files to at present selected project in a database using the Add Files command on the File menu of Visual SourceSafe Explorer. You can also add one or more files to the database using drag and drop from Windows Explorer to Visual SourceSafe Explorer. And you can also add the files in database with the help of Add command from the command line. The files added to Visual SourceSafe are filtered by the settings on the File Types tab in the SourceSafe Options dialog box.

To add a single file to a database:

1.       In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, open the database.

2.        Ensure that you have the correct project rights to add files to the database

3.       Select the project.

4.       On the File menu, click Add Files.

5.       In the Add File to <name> dialog box, select a file type in the List files of type box. This is an optional step used to filter the file list so that it is not so long.

6.       Using the folder and file name lists, select the file and click add to place it in the project. Files already in the project are not displayed in the file name list.

7.       Enter a comment if desired, and then click OK.

To add multiple files to a database:

6.       Using the drive and folder lists, select the folder containing the files to add.

7.       In the file name list, hold down the CTRL key and click all the files you want to add. To select all displayed files, press the HOME key to move to the beginning of the list, then SHIFT+END to move to the end. This dialog box will accommodate only 256 characters.

8.       Click Add to place the selected files in the current project. Files already in the project are not displayed in the file name list.

9.       Enter a comment if desired, and then click OK.
