Discuss the 10 most important uses of Quantum Computers

HARIDHA P65 12-Mar-2024

Recent advances in Quantum Computing (QC), such as Google establishing quantum dominance, have caused interest in QC. However, there is limited knowledge on how quantum computing will affect enterprises. Our study indicates to the following categories of quantum computing use cases and real-world applications:

  • Optimization Research
  • Cryptography/espionage

Optimization Use Cases

Optimisation challenges exist in many sectors and business processes, and some of them take too long to address optimally using conventional computers. Two quantum techniques can be utilized to overcome these difficulties.

Quantum annealing is an optimization strategy that is projected to outperform traditional computers in some optimization tasks. Quantum annealing may be implemented on specialized quantum annealers, which are far simpler to create than a universal quantum computer.

Discuss the 10 most important uses of Quantum Computers

Currently, such computers are accessible; nevertheless, their superiority over traditional computers has yet to be established. Cheaper digital annealers use conventional computation to look like quantum annealers, making them more cost-effective.

Universal quantum computers have the capacity of addressing any computing difficulty. However, they will take longer to become readily accessible since more research needs to be done to increase their reliability.

Some optimization difficulties from multiple sectors, where certain businesses are investing in quantum computing instead of poor algorithms, are listed below:

10 most important uses of Quantum Computers

Automotive:

1. Optimizing big autonomous fleets: Volkswagen collaborated with Google to build autonomous vehicles using quantum computing.

Energy:

2. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has been collaborating with Microsoft since 2020 to optimize energy utilization using quantum computing.

3- Grid optimization: The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has created two labs dedicated to integrating quantum computing with grid optimization.

4- Weather forecasting: IBM uses quantum computing to give precise weather forecasts, and it is now serving almost all consumer tech businesses, including Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook.

Finance:

5- Automated trading (such as forecasting financial markets)

6- Risk analysis: Caixa Bank launched a pilot initiative to test quantum computing for risk categorization algorithms.

7- Portfolio optimization: KPMG conducted a portfolio management benchmarking test and discovered that quantum computing outperformed all other benchmarking approaches for near-term investments.

8- Fraud detection: In 2022, PayPal will collaborate with IBM to deploy quantum computing in fraud detection.

Insurance:

9- Valuation of instruments and premiums in complicated cases: Anthem, a health insurance firm, plans to deploy IBM's quantum computing technology for data-intensive activities including recognizing health irregularities.

Logistics:

10- Route and traffic optimization: DWave, a QC business, collaborated with Toyota to conduct research demonstrating that employing QC for traffic prediction and optimization outperforms conventional alternatives.

Research Use Cases

Quantum simulation can help scientists better comprehend molecular and sub-molecule interactions, leading to advances in chemistry, biology, healthcare, and nanotechnology.

Physical experiments and analysis of data are fundamental approaches utilized in chemical research. Simulating these studies in a traditional computer system and speeding up the process without the need for real experiments appears far. On the other hand, noise, which looks to be an issue for quantum computers, might be beneficial in chemical research. Simulations using quantum calculations create noise that exposes facts of chemical processes.
