# Synthesia: Building an AI Video Business Around Workplace Training

A company changes its expense policy. Someone updates the handbook, but the training video still explains the old rules. Re-recording it means finding a presenter, arranging production and repeating the process for every language the company supports.

That recurring problem helps explain Synthesia’s appeal. The London-based startup, founded in 2017, lets businesses create presenter-led videos from scripts using AI avatars and synthetic voices. Its commercial opportunity is less about replacing cinema and more about making ordinary workplace communication cheaper to produce and easier to maintain.

## A business built on repeat work

Synthesia targets jobs such as employee onboarding videos, sales enablement content and internal training. Users prepare a script, choose an avatar and assemble scenes in a browser-based editor rather than organising a conventional shoot.

The distinction matters. A company may commission a promotional film once, but its internal instructions keep changing. Products get new features. Policies are revised. Teams expand into additional countries. Each change creates another reason to return to the platform.

For buyers, the useful comparison is not always “Does this look as convincing as a professional presenter?” It can be “Can we give every employee an understandable, updated explanation without booking another recording session?”

## What makes it a credible startup success?

In January 2025, Synthesia announced a **$180 million Series D funding round led by NEA, valuing the company at $2.1 billion**. At that time, it also reported that more than 60,000 businesses used its platform. These are dated, company-reported milestones, not a statement of its current valuation or an independently audited customer count.

Those figures support its position as an established AI startup with substantial commercial adoption. They do not, on their own, establish profitability. Funding shows investor confidence; customer retention, revenue quality and operating costs determine whether that confidence becomes a durable business.

Synthesia’s subscription model connects naturally to its use case. Smaller teams can start with limited production needs, while larger organisations may require greater capacity, collaboration features and enterprise controls. The opportunity is to become part of the ongoing training process rather than a tool employees try once for novelty.

## The product has to work beyond the demo

Generating a convincing short clip is only one part of the job. For a business rolling out multilingual training content, several less glamorous details matter:

- **Review:** A subject-matter expert must check that the script is accurate before a polished avatar gives it an undeserved sense of authority.
- **Localisation:** Translated narration still needs checks for terminology, pronunciation and cultural context.
- **Maintenance:** Teams need a reliable way to identify outdated videos and distribute corrected versions.
- **Governance:** Buyers need clarity about access permissions, data handling and consent for custom avatars.

These requirements create room for differentiation beyond the underlying video model. Enterprise video workflows are harder to replace when they become part of how a company reviews, approves and publishes information.

There are limits to the format, too. An avatar explaining a reimbursement process may be perfectly adequate. An avatar delivering a sensitive leadership message may feel evasive. Synthesia’s strongest fit is repeatable instructional communication, not every situation in which a human could appear on camera.

## The lesson for other founders

Synthesia illustrates a practical route into enterprise AI: find a frequent production bottleneck, reduce the effort involved and make revisions easier. AI avatar technology attracts attention, but the business case rests on what happens after the first video—another department adopts it, a course needs updating or a new language version becomes necessary.

Its longer-term challenge is defending that workflow as competing tools improve. For buyers, the deciding factors may increasingly be editorial control, predictable costs and responsible synthetic media practices rather than the most eye-catching avatar.
