# Samsung Launches Galaxy XR, Bringing Android XR to a New Headset

Samsung has launched the Galaxy XR, a mixed-reality headset built on Android XR, the platform it developed with Google and Qualcomm. The device went on sale in the United States and South Korea on October 21, 2025, with a U.S. starting price of $1,799.99.

The launch gives Android XR its first commercial headset and adds a new contender to a market where Apple and Meta have already established products. Samsung’s approach leans on familiar Android apps alongside spatial experiences, rather than treating the headset as a device only for virtual reality.

## Gemini is part of the experience

Google’s [Gemini assistant](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117450/what-changes-when-gemini-becomes-the-default-android-assistant) is integrated into the Galaxy XR experience. Users can ask questions about what they are viewing and interact with the assistant while using the headset. That kind of contextual help is a central part of the pitch for Android XR: the headset is meant to combine digital content with the wearer’s surroundings, not simply replace the real world with a virtual scene.

Samsung also highlights its display and passthrough capabilities, which let users see their physical environment while digital windows and other content appear in view. The headset’s external battery pack keeps some of the weight off the head, though it does mean users have another piece of hardware to carry and manage.

## A platform launch as much as a hardware launch

The Galaxy XR matters beyond Samsung’s own product line because it gives developers a device to build for as Android XR takes shape. A broader app selection will be important if the platform is to compete with established headset ecosystems. Samsung, Google and Qualcomm are betting that Android’s existing developer base and Google’s services can help attract that interest.

At $1,799.99, the Galaxy XR is still a high-priced device, and its appeal will depend on whether people find enough useful everyday experiences to justify wearing a headset. For now, the launch is a concrete first step for the Android XR platform—and a test of whether Samsung and Google can make mixed reality feel like more than a premium demonstration.
