# Google Opens AI Mode in Search to Users Across the United States

**May 20, 2025** — Google has opened [AI Mode in Google Search](https://www.mindstick.com/news/4357/google-app-prepares-new-shortcut-for-upcoming-search-ai-mode) to users across the United States, moving the conversational search experience beyond its earlier Labs test. The rollout gives eligible users a dedicated way to ask more involved questions, explore AI-generated responses and continue with follow-up questions without starting a new search each time.

AI Mode is designed for queries that may need more than a list of links: planning a trip, comparing several products or asking a question with multiple parts. Google says the experience uses a customized version of its Gemini 2.5 model and draws on Search’s index to provide responses alongside links to websites.

## A different route through Search

Rather than treating a complex prompt as one conventional search, AI Mode can break it into smaller searches and pursue them in parallel. Google calls this approach “query fan-out.” The system can then assemble information from those searches into a response, while users can ask for clarification or narrow the request in the same conversation.

That changes the rhythm of searching. A person comparing weekend destinations, for example, can ask about travel time, costs and activities together, then follow up on one option. The AI response may make that first pass quicker, but the linked sources remain important: they let readers check details, compare perspectives and visit the publishers behind the information.

Google’s rollout also illustrates the company’s broader effort to make generative AI a regular part of its core product rather than a separate destination. AI Overviews already place AI-generated summaries in some standard results; AI Mode offers a more conversational, multi-step experience for people who choose to use it.

## Features are still being tested

Google has described additional capabilities, including Deep Search and agentic search capabilities, as features being developed or tested through Labs. Those experiments point toward searches that could handle more complicated research or take actions on a user’s behalf, but they should not be confused with every capability available in the general U.S. rollout.

The expansion raises familiar questions about how AI summaries cite and represent online material, and whether users will still click through to the sites that provide the underlying information. Google has said AI Mode includes links to relevant web pages; the usefulness of those links will depend on how clearly they support the claims in each answer.

For now, the practical change is straightforward: U.S. users can try a more conversational search option directly in Google Search. Its success will depend not only on how fluent its responses sound, but on whether the answers are reliable, the sources are useful and people can easily tell what is generated by AI.
