# Instagram has officially removed support for encrypted direct messages.

**As of May 8, 2026**, Meta has officially discontinued support for **end-to-end encrypted (E2EE)** [direct messages](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/32145/should-i-use-automated-direct-messages-on-twitter) on Instagram. This move reverses a major privacy pledge made years ago and shifts Instagram's messaging back to **standard encryption**, where Meta can technically access chat content when necessary.

## Key Details of the Removal

- **Reasons for the Change**: Meta cited **low adoption** as the [primary reason](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/41801/what-was-the-primary-reason-for-the-failure-of-the-national-recovery-act), noting that very few users manually enabled the optional E2EE feature. Analysts also point to pressure from global regulators and laws like the **Take It Down Act** (effective May 19), which require platforms to scan for and remove illegal content—a task made impossible by E2EE.
- **What This Means for Users**:

   - Meta now has the capability to scan DMs for **moderation**, **AI scam detection**, and compliance with [law enforcement](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/101683/how-is-internal-security-and-law-enforcement-managed-in-india) requests.
   - Standard DMs, which are not end-to-end encrypted, remain the default for the vast majority of users.
   - Affected users who had active encrypted chats are being prompted to **download their [chat history](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/32493/how-do-i-move-chat-history-to-my-new-phone)** and media before the feature is fully purged.

- **Impact on Other Platforms**: Meta’s other services, **WhatsApp** and **[Facebook Messenger](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1302/facebook-messenger-updates-secret-conversations-features-adding-gifs-stickers-reactions)**, currently retain their E2EE features. Meta has encouraged users seeking high-level privacy to migrate their sensitive conversations to **WhatsApp**
