# SpaceX All Set to Launch Private Crew for Spacewalk Mission

## Blast-off for Polaris Down

[SpaceX](https://www.mindstick.com/category/articles/space-and-research)’s Polaris Dawn mission was [successfully launched](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2373/skyroot-aerospace-successfully-launched-vikram-s-india-s-first-private-rocket-into-space) on early Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, after prolonged delays. After delays faced due to unfavorable [weather conditions](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33649/what-country-has-the-best-climate-in-the-world-not-too-hot-not-too-cold-no-extreme-weather-conditions-etc), it is designed to carry about four crew members to the highest orbital attitude.

## Highlights: -

- It is the first spacewalk carried out by an all-civilian crew.
- It lifted off at 5:24 a.m. with the Extra-Terrestrial Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy [Space Centre](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94137/which-is-the-only-indian-island-where-isro-has-set-up-a-space-centre) in Florida.
- It is 870 miles above Earth’s surface, i.e... three times higher than the [International Space](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/114598/how-does-the-international-space-station-iss-benefit-from-nasa-s-research) Station.
- In space, the group will test new spacesuits and technologies, to pave for future long-duration missions to the moon and later extended to Mars.

This mission was led by Jared Isaacman, the founder of Shift4Payments, and had former US [Air Force](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/34929/when-was-pearl-harbour-attacked-by-the-japanese-air-force) pilot Scott Poteet and SpaceX [engineers](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/12377/10-tips-to-pass-comptia-security-for-future-specialists-and-engineers) Anna Menon and Sarah Gills in his team. The crew broke the record of 853 miles achieved by [NASA](https://www.mindstick.com/news/3249/nasa-launches-new-site-beta)’s Gemini 11 mission in 1956.

The historic event has well managed the pressure [differences](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12918/cat-5e-vs-cat-6a-understanding-the-major-differences), avoided exposure to toxic elements usage, and followed the precautionary measures while executing the mission. Though Isaacman declined to reveal the total [investment](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13065/an-investment-in-certification-software-gives-peace), it is assumed to be $200 million.
