# In India, WhatsApp has banned over 74 lakh accounts; here's why.

WhatsApp has banned over 74 lakh [accounts](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33250/what-are-accounts-in-salesforce) in India in August, aiming to combat abuse and comply with IT Rules 2021. The Meta-owned company banned 7,420,748 accounts between August 1-31, with 3,506,905 of them being proactively banned before user reports, according to WhatsApp's monthly [compliance report](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/96034/under-which-rules-google-india-released-its-compliance-report-regarding-the-deletion-of-contents).

WhatsApp received 14,767 complaint reports in India in August, and took remedial action on 71 of these reports. This action involved banning an account or restoring a previously banned one.
