# How to Encrypt Your Emails in Gmail

The internet is unsafe if data is not vigilantly protected, especially when sending sensitive information via email. Despite Google's claim of Gmail being secure without add-ons, email hacking and [phishing attacks](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/304218/the-rise-of-qr-code-phishing-attacks) continue to occur, emphasizing the [importance of data](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/107410/importance-of-data-backup) [protection](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301143/how-to-wear-knee-braces-for-the-best-protection) in the [digital age](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13080/wikipedia-the-most-powerful-advertising-platform-of-the-digital-age).

Google has introduced a handful of methods like [encryption](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/1620/encryption-and-decryption-in-asp-dot-net) and Confidential mode to help users to make their mail safer by adding an additional degree of security.

If you want to send emails securely through Gmail, here's how.

## Encrypting emails in Gmail

S/MIME in Gmail is a feature that enables users to secure their emails by preventing hackers from injecting malware or viruses. To enable it, users need to go to the Google Admin console, select Apps → [Google Workspace](https://www.mindstick.com/news/4183/india-overtakes-the-us-to-have-the-largest-google-workspace-users-worldwide), and click Gmail. Then, select User settings and select the [domain name](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12298/how-to-select-seo-friendly-domain-names-for-your-new-website) to activate S/MIME encryption. Once enabled, users can compose emails and add recipients, which will display a lock icon next to their names. The encryption levels are Green, Gray, Red, and Green, respectively, indicating the level of encryption. This feature is only available for paid Gmail users and is available across all platforms, including [mobile apps](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13068/mobile-apps-and-its-growing-importance-for-today-s-businesses) and the web.
