# Elon Musk says ‘cheating is…’ after Twitter threatens to sue Meta over Threads

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of **Twitter**, has responded to the company's threat to sue Meta over its new Threads app. In a tweet, Musk said that "competition is fine, cheating is not."

Twitter sent a cease-and-desist letter to Meta on July 5, accusing the company of poaching Twitter employees who had access to the company's trade secrets. The letter also alleged that Meta had been "scraping" Twitter's data, which is a practice of c**ollecting data from a website without the website's permission.**

Meta has denied the allegations, and its CEO, **[Mark Zuckerberg](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/85512/elon-musk-mark-zuckerberg-two-business-tycoon-of-similar-age)**, has said that the company is "building Threads independently." However, Twitter is reportedly considering filing a lawsuit against Meta.

Musk's tweet about cheating is a reference to a recent interview in which he said that he believes that Meta is "a copycat" of Twitter. Musk has also said that he believes that Twitter needs to be more innovative in order to compete with other social [media platforms](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/114434/can-social-media-platforms-effectively-combat-online-misinformation-without-censorship).

The threat of a lawsuit between **Twitter and Meta is the [latest development](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/111002/what-s-the-latest-development-in-space-exploration) in a long-running rivalry between the two companies. Twitter has accused Meta of copying its features in the past, and Meta has accused Twitter of censorship.**

The lawsuit, if it is filed, could have a [significant impact](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/51285/why-did-the-misery-index-have-a-significant-impact-on-carter-s-election-loss-in-1980-a-it-highlighted-carter-s-foreign-policy-failures-b-it-showed-carter-s-lack-of-commitment-to-social-welfare-c) on the [social media](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13056/how-to-leverage-social-media-to-attract-lots-of-blog-traffic) landscape. It could also set a precedent for how companies compete with each other in the [digital age.](https://www.mindstick.com/news/3135/meta-launches-twitter-rival-threads-in-100-countries)

In addition to his tweet about cheating, Musk has also been critical of Meta's privacy practices. In a separate tweet, he said that Meta "has built an advertising business on the back of surveillance."

Musk's comments about Meta come as the **company is facing increasing scrutiny over its data practices. In recent months, Meta has been fined by the [European Union](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/81325/european-union-loses-to-china) for violating [data privacy](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/304706/google-s-new-data-privacy-technology-everything-you-must-know) laws. The company is also facing a number of lawsuits from users who allege that their data has been misused.**

It remains to be seen whether Musk's comments will have any impact on Meta's business. However, they are a sign that the billionaire is not afraid to challenge the company.

The rivalry between [Twitter and Meta](https://www.mindstick.com/news/3126/twitter-launches-new-tweetdeck-as-the-old-version-breaks-down) is likely to continue for some time. Both companies are vying for dominance in the social media market, and they are not afraid to use aggressive tactics to [achieve their goals](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/50183/what-methods-did-the-spanish-friars-used-to-achieve-their-goals). It will be interesting to see how the rivalry plays out in the years to come.
