# Apple Watch bands may in the future change colour depending on your clothing.

Apple is doing research to determine how to include a color-changing feature into the Apple Watch band that not only complements the wearer's wardrobe but also serves as a [notification system](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/99880/describe-the-android-notification-system-and-its-components).

AppleInsider reports that a recently issued patent purports to demonstrate that the company is doing just that.

The [application](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12824/calculator-application-in-android) "Watch Band With Adjustable Colour" recommends that [customers](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13008/how-does-a-customer-portal-enhance-the-experience-of-customers) buy only one Watch band that changes color rather than several different bands to complement various outfits.

The recently issued patent states, "Users may wish the option to customize their watch bands to convey diversity and style." This statement was made in reference to the watch band customization feature.

"For instance, a user may wish a watch band of a specific color based on the user's [selection](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/60/populate-records-in-second-listbox-according-to-the-selection-in-first-list-box) of apparel, other wearable goods, surroundings, or another preference," it continued. "This preference may also be influenced by the user's choice of other [environmental factors](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/115532/how-do-environmental-factors-influence-respiratory-health-and-increase-health-risks), such as the season."

The concept is explained in Apple's patent by referring to Watch bands as having "electrochromic characteristics." This indicates that "an applied voltage" may produce "many color combinations to be shown by a single band."

According to the source, even though the patent makes an effort to detail every application that may be made of its primary concept, the primary examples focus on bands produced from a fabric woven from filaments.

"Electrochromic [properties](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/23331/nootropics-7-different-types-and-their-unique-properties) may be included into some, all, or none of the filaments. One or more of the filaments, for instance, could have a conductor and an electrochromic layer "Apple was the one who made the statement.

"It is possible to establish an electrical [connection](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13012/what-makes-ethernet-connection-better-than-wifi) between the electrochromic layer and the conductor. This will allow any voltage applied to the conductor to be sent to the electrochromic layer.

The electrochromic layer may comprise a polymer layer... (which) can respond, in the presence of an applied voltage, to alter its color, as will be explained in more detail herein, "it said.

The multinational [technology](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13005/the-functional-aspects-of-laser-technology) company also noted, "It is not necessary to remove or replace the watch band to make color choices or make adjustments to them.

As a result, it is possible to show a wide range of colors at various times without the need for separate watch bands for each color combination ".

According to the source, there were four people who contributed to the invention of the patent. Three people, Zhengyu Li, Chia Chi Wu, and Qiliang Xu, had previously researched touch-sensitive materials for a potential future HomePod.
