# Musk claims that a more expensive Twitter subscription won't include advertisements

Elon Musk, who owns Twitter, tweeted on Saturday that a paid subscription to the [social media](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13056/how-to-leverage-social-media-to-attract-lots-of-blog-traffic) site will not have ads.

\

The billionaire also said that ads on Twitter are 'too frequent and too big,' and he said that steps will be taken in the coming weeks to fix these problems.

\

When asked for a comment, Twitter didn't answer right away.

\

Nearly 90% of **Twitter's** income comes from selling digital ads. Recently, Musk said that a 'massive drop in revenue' was caused by rights groups pressuring brands to stop running ads on Twitter.

\

Musk said at the beginning of December that Twitter's Basic blue tick will have half as many ads and that by 2023, it will have a higher tier with no ads.

\

Since Musk took over the company in October, the [social network](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12698/how-to-use-social-networks-to-sell-more-at-christmas)'s finances have been in a lot of trouble.

\

'There are too many ads on Twitter, and they are too big. Taking steps to deal with both over the next few weeks.

\

And for those who want it, Musk said, 'there will be a higher-priced subscription that lets you watch without any ads.'

\

That would be a big change for **Twitter's** [business model](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/115104/how-has-the-rise-of-streaming-platforms-fundamentally-changed-hollywood-s-business-model), which has so far been based on targeted advertising. In mid-December, Twitter started a paid subscription service, which is a big step away from targeted advertising.

\

But since [Musk fired](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84099/elon-musk-fired-twitter-execs-including-ceo-parag-agrawal-and-many-more) about half of Twitter's 7,500 employees late last year, advertising has become a [question mark](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/49900/how-to-fix-a-mac-with-a-flashing-question-mark) for the company. The move made people worry that the company didn't have enough people to moderate content, which scared governments and advertisers.

\

Musk said that his plan was to make a lot more money while cutting costs by a lot. He said that a new service called Twitter Blue, which gives users a wanted blue verification tick for a fee, would help him reach this goal.

\

A page on the company's website says that the service costs $11 a month in the [United States](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2228/the-united-states-claims-seagate-broke-export-laws-by-selling-huawei-hard-drives) and is available on both Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

\

You can also sign up for a web subscription for $8 per month or, for a discount, $84 per year.

\

Twitter Blue is currently available in the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

\

Under Musk's leadership, Twitter has been a mess, with [mass layoffs](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/87031/2023-and-2024-mass-layoffs-in-the-united-states), the return of banned accounts, and the suspension of journalists who were critical of the South African billionaire.

\

Racist or hateful tweets went up after Musk took over, which got the attention of regulators and scared away big advertisers, Twitter's main [source of income](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/49605/why-having-a-multiple-source-of-income-important-for-an-individual).
