# Boston Dynamics Atlas Robot Grabs and Throws Like a Human

The Atlas Robot from Boston Dynamics was updated with improved, more human-like gestures and movement. The [humanoid robot](https://www.mindstick.com/news/4551/amazon-set-to-test-humanoid-robots-for-deliveries-report) with grippers was presented and its skills were shown in a YouTube video by the robot business from Waltham, Massachusetts. The robot is seen navigating tough terrain while doing challenging tasks like collecting and throwing an object.

\

The Atlas Robot from Boston Dynamics is demonstrated moving like a human while negotiating a challenging [environment](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/308/need-to-create-a-supportive-work-environment-for-women) in a video posted to the company's YouTube channel. In addition to seizing a plank and leaping to spin it around, carrying it, and setting it in place to make a bridge so that it can walk between two platforms while holding onto a toolbox, the Atlas Robot is seen in this scene.

\

The Atlas[**Robot**](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/23162/innovative-robotic-applications-for-the-future) is then seen walking across the platform bridge it constructed and throwing the toolbox to the person on top of the scaffolding. The manoeuvre is described by Boston Dynamics as an inverted 540-degree, multi-axis flip.

\

After successfully handing the toolbox to the guy on the ledge above, the Atlas Robot then theatrically continues to perform a backflip while still on the thin platform.

\

The demonstration shows how [humanoid robots](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/87462/humanoid-robots-will-replace-workers-in-the-coming-future), like the Atlas, may eventually replace people in tasks that involve a risk of death and significant harm if performed by people.

\

Boston Dynamics and IBM's cooperation led to the recent deployment of robot dogs for autonomous inspection at [US National](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/33527/which-us-national-parks-feel-the-most-crowded) Grid installations. For routine inspections at the gas and electric utility facilities in Massachusetts and New York, IBM Research has incorporated [artificial intelligence](https://www.mindstick.com/services/artificial-intelligence) (AI) into robotic dogs called Spot.

\

It hasn't always been easy for Boston Dynamics to use robots in real-world situations and [applications](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12847/how-to-choose-the-right-ethernet-cable-for-industrial-applications), despite their revolutionary nature. After facing backlash for selling Spot to local police agencies, including the NYPD, the NYPD ended the contract.

\
As a Massachusetts [Institute of Technology](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/43822/what-is-the-placement-and-internship-scenario-at-ms-ramaiah-institute-of-technology-bengaluru) spin-off, Boston Dynamics is an American [engineering](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/12520/earning-a-internal-engineering-graduate-rank-online) and robotics design firm that was established in 1992. Boston Dynamics, with its headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been a part of the Hyundai Motor Group since December 2020, however the [acquisition](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2246/following-elon-musk-s-acquisition-gm-suspends-its-twitter-advertising) wasn't finalised until June 2021.

BigDog, Spot, Atlas, and Handle are just a few of the dynamic, highly mobile robots that Boston Dynamics has created. The first Boston Dynamics robot to be made commercially available, Spot, did so in 2019. Boston Dynamics has declared its intention to commercialise other robots as well, including Handle.
