# India May Ban News Labeled As Fake By the Government on Social Media

[Indian government](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84685/why-indian-government-should-ban-madarsa-to-trained-jihadis) will not allow [social networking](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/32304/how-does-social-networking-affect-privacy) sites to contain any content that it deems inappropriate, according to a new proposal for the nation's IT rules published this week,.

This is merely the most recent in a series of actions made by [Prime Minister Narendra Modi](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/88529/prime-minister-narendra-modi-s-public-appeal-to-revive-work-from-home-wfh)'s government in India to impose control over important digital firms.

The data that the Media Agency (PIB), a group authorized representative to conduct realisation, or 'its area in which such activity is conducted' considers toward being 'false or fraudulent' would be prohibited from publication under the proposed law.

It was emphasised that once such material has been detected, [social media](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/301538/social-media-turning-into-toolkit-of-terrorists) platforms or other 'digital middlemen' must 'take reasonable steps' to ensure users don't 'host, display, publish, edit, broadcast, transmit, save, update or distribute' it.

The government indicated that a committee would be set up in October to examine user complaints on the decisions taken by social media companies regarding [content moderation](https://www.mindstick.com/news/3681/elon-musk-x-didn-t-comply-with-order-to-block-california-content-moderation). These companies are already obligated to name CEOs and executives [responsible](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94149/who-is-one-of-the-responsible-person-for-the-department-of-space-dos) for handling internal complaints who will work with [law enforcement](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/101683/how-is-internal-security-and-law-enforcement-managed-in-india).

The government routinely engaged in legal disputes with various platforms when pleas for such deletion of content including users that were allegedly disseminating false information were rejected.
