# Data protection legislation will stop the exploitation of client data and punish offenders

According to Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the new [data protection](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/303929/what-is-data-protection-and-why-is-it-important) bill will end the exploitation of [**customer data**](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2230/pathology-data-stolen-in-australia-as-hacking-plague-spreads) and provide for sanctions against offenders. In response to Google's settlement of a US investigation, the minister expressed his opinion.

The investigation found that the Internet giant deceived users and continued tracking their locations even after they opted out of the location [tracking system](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/31994/which-organisation-introduces-online-bill-tracking-system-for-vendors-contractors). **Google has consented to settle the dispute, and it will shell out about $392 million to do so (roughly Rs. 3,178 crore).**

The administration withdrew the Personal Data [Protection Bill](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/70567/data-protection-bill-understanding-our-data) from Lok Sabha in August and announced it would introduce a 'series of novel legislations' that would be compatible with the overall legal framework. According to government sources, a new data protection measure will be presented to Parliament during its [winter session](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/110876/what-is-the-indian-parliament-winter-session).

**Over 95% of the Indian [smartphone market](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/84784/how-samsung-leads-indian-smartphone-market-with-highest-sales) is dominated by Google's Android.** The Oregon Department of Justice elaborated on the settlement, stating that location data is a crucial component of Google's [digital advertising](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/105589/how-to-implement-geotargeting-in-digital-advertising) business. Using the behavioural and personal data it collects, the company builds [**comprehensive user profiles**](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2226/data-protection-bill-will-be-simple-and-modern) and targets advertisements. One of the most sensitive and significant pieces of personal data that Google collects is location data.

It is possible to use even a tiny amount of location data to deduce [personal information](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102585/how-to-secure-personal-information-on-a-laptop) and uncover someone's identity and habits. The US attorneys general determined that Google has misled customers about its location monitoring methods since at least 2014, in violation of state [consumer protection](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/38063/consumer-protection-act-1986-was-amended-in) laws. According to the statement, '**Google specifically misled its customers about the degree to which they may limit Google's location tracking by modifying their account and device settings.'**
