# Amazon.com unveils device that tracks breath while sleeping

In addition to a **redesigned Kindle** that enables users to write on the e-reader, **Amazon.com Inc. on Wednesday also unveiled a contactless gadget to track customers' sleep patterns.**

The **Halo Rise sleep monitor, which costs $139.99, according to Amazon, tracks the breathing patterns of the individual who is nearest to it as well as the room's temperature, humidity, and light.** Users are intended to get [understanding](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12918/cat-5e-vs-cat-6a-understanding-the-major-differences) into why they might or might not feel refreshed when they wake up.

At its annual [products and services](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/99754/how-can-online-reviews-help-you-make-better-decisions-about-products-and-services) presentation, the e-commerce business announced the price of its new e-reader, the **Kindle Scribe, at $339.99.**

Similar to its rivals **Apple Inc**. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Amazon has made investments in consumer health-tracking technology. These investments have occasionally attracted regulatory attention due to the **sensitive data they sought to collect, such as body fat percentage via their fitness wristband Halo.**

According to Amazon, privacy is essential to everything company does. The sleep appliance has no camera or microphone and will encrypt [medical data](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/111272/how-does-blockchain-technology-secure-medical-data).

Announcing in July that it will spend $3.5 billion to acquire [primary care](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/114417/what-strategies-best-address-mental-health-integration-into-primary-care-services) provider **One Medical (ONEM.O),** the retailer is also looking at health in a broader sense.
