# US Treasury Explains about Export of Some Satellite Internet Equipment to Iran

On **Tuesday,** the **U.S. Treasury Department** has mentioned that some [satellite internet](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/story/3057/first-satellite-internet) [instruments](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94209/is-a-court-fee-is-applicable-for-complaints-under-section-138-of-the-negotiable-instruments-act) would be exported to **Iran**, recommending that **SpaceX CEO Elon Musk** might not require a license to give the firm's **Starlink** satellite broadband service within the country.

[Elon Musk](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1824/elon-musk-has-been-launching-thousands-of-satellites-what-can-be-the-reason-to-his-starlink-launch) has mentioned on **Monday** that the company would question for an exemption from sanctions against Iran. According to Musk's reply to a Tweet, '**Starlink would ask for an exemption to Iranian sanctions in regarding to this**.'

Musk's tweet had not provided any additional details on his plans however it came at a time of widespread protests in Iran over the death of a woman within police custody. The Treasury would not definitely specify whether or not the license would be able to apply to Musk's plans.

Some of the people had asked Musk on Twitter to offer the satellite-based internet stations. Well, access to [social media](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/13056/how-to-leverage-social-media-to-attract-lots-of-blog-traffic) and a few content has been strictly restricted in Iran.

The **Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)** encompasses a long license that '**authorizes some exports to Iran of hardware, software along with services associated with [communications](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/44489/leased-lines-and-other-tools-for-business-communications) over the internet, which would include some consumer-grade [internet connectivity](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102425/what-role-does-a-network-router-play-in-internet-connectivity) services and residential consumer satellite terminals licensed under the General License D-1**,' a department spokesperson has mentioned in a statement.

The person has added to the statement that '**For any kind of exports which were not covered by existing authorizations, OFAC welcomes [applications](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12847/how-to-choose-the-right-ethernet-cable-for-industrial-applications) for specific licenses to authorize [activities](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/2589/describe-android-activities-in-brief) which would support internet freedom in Iran**.'

SpaceX has been aiming to rapidly expand Starlink, and it would race rival [satellite](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1991/musk-s-spacex-was-taken-by-apple-along-with-its-satellite-sos-on-iphones) communications companies which would include **OneWeb** and **Amazon** which have been yet to launch **Project Kuiper**.
