# To Settle Location Tracking Lawsuit for $37.5 Million, Meta Files Motion

**Meta** had already reached a **$37.5 million settlement** within a lawsuit that alleged that the company had violated the users privacy by collecting its [location](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1707/google-to-delete-location-data-after-the-user-visits-abortion-clinics) without asking for their permission. The firm was defendant of collecting location information of its users without even asking for their consent, even the location services were turned off on on their smartphones, by inferring details from their **internet protocol (IP)** which addresses to serve them targeted advertising.

On **Monday**, [Meta](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1831/meta-announced-its-first-ever-bond-offering-investment-in-virtual-reality-projects) had filed a motion to settle the proceeding within **[San Francisco](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/39936/in-2006-which-player-signed-a-one-day-contract-with-the-american-football-team-san-francisco-49ers-then-retired)** [federal court](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/32911/how-are-jurors-contacted-for-service-in-federal-court-in-the-usa) in the **USA**. Previously it was mentioned that the proceeding have claimed that Meta had collected the [personal details](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/93397/are-my-personal-details-at-mindstick-profile-safe-and-secure) of its users which would include their location, even when the location services were turned off.

As per the reports, the users in the USA who had used the company's **Facebook** [social networking](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/32304/how-does-social-networking-affect-privacy) service after **January 30, 2015**, were going to be covered by the settlement.

Therefore, the lawsuit had alleged that the users were served targeted ads which were based on their location from their [IP addresses](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/157830/what-is-dhcp-and-what-are-some-of-the-benefits-of-using-dhcp-to-manage-ip-addresses-on-a-network) that had disclosed their locations to Facebook.

[According to the report](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/38115/according-to-the-report-released-by-the-ministry-of-environment-forests-and-climate-change-on-august-12-what-is-the-total-estimated-number-of-elephants-in-india), the lawsuit against Facebook was started in **November 2018**, when the company's **CEO [Mark Zuckerberg](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/85512/elon-musk-mark-zuckerberg-two-business-tycoon-of-similar-age)** has mentioned the **US Congress** that the firm had used location information in order to assist advertisers to target the users in particular areas. However, the company had denied its wrongdoing within the lawsuit.
