# Protein Known to Science is Finally Predicted by Artificial Intelligence

[Artificial intelligence](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1614/google-fired-artificial-intelligence-researcher-in-a-dispute-with-chip-design-research) has found out the shape of every virtual protein known to science.

```
HIGHLIGHTSAI found the shape of every virtual protein known to scienceProteins are the building blocks of life and shape is linked with their functionAlphaFold Protein Structure Database is freely available to scientific community
```

As per the experts the breakthrough would help to tackle major [global challenges](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/100918/what-are-some-major-global-challenges-addressed-by-the-united-nations) like developing malaria vaccines and fighting [plastic pollution](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/111822/what-measures-are-being-taken-to-address-plastic-pollution).

Proteins would be considered as the [building blocks](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/2557/what-are-the-core-building-blocks-of-android) of life, and their shape would be closely linked to their function. They are being able to predict a protein’s structure which provides [scientists](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1658/scientists-have-ascertained-a-method-to-create-environment-friendly-cement-from-waste-materials) a better understanding of what it works and the way it works.

Therefore, the research was conducted by **DeepMind** and **EMBL’s European [Bioinformatics](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/333474/bioinformatics-where-biology-meets-cutting-edge-technology) Institute (EMBL-EBI)**, that had used the **AlphaFold** [AI system](https://www.mindstick.com/news/797/ai-to-design-the-next-gen-artificial-intelligence-chip-faster-than-humans-google) to predict a protein’s 3D structure.

The **AlphaFold Protein Structure Database** would be freely available to the scientific community. Well, it has been expanded from nearly one million protein structures to over two hundred million structures, which has covered nearly each organism on [Earth](https://www.mindstick.com/news/883/the-earth-has-a-new-eye-nasa-s-landsat-9) that has had its genome sequenced.

The expansion would include predicted shapes for the widest possible range of species, which includes plants, bacteria, animals, and other organisms. It has been opening up new avenues of research across the life [sciences](https://www.mindstick.com/news/1753/today-s-science-is-in-the-process-of-making-chocolates-tastes-better).

**Demis Hassabis**, founder and **CEO of DeepMind** have mentioned that '**we would have been stunned by the rate at which AlphaFold has already become a vital tool for many thousands of scientists in labs and universities across the globe**.'
