# In India, the Instagram Subscriptions feature allowed users to pay for exclusive content.

On Android and iOS, subscriptions can be paid for through in-app purchases.

## WHY IN NEWS

Instagram recently started testing paying subscribers with some content producers and influencers in the [United States](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2228/the-united-states-claims-seagate-broke-export-laws-by-selling-huawei-hard-drives), allowing them to start charging their supporters a monthly fee is charged for exclusive content, live videos, and stories, [as well as](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/2481/can-you-write-a-java-class-that-could-be-used-both-as-an-applet-as-well-as-an-application) a purple badge beside their account title to demonstrate they have been subscribed once they communicate with maker. The app also displays purple badges next to usernames, as well as information on what subscribers are entitled to, such as [subscriber](https://www.mindstick.com/news/2185/netflix-reverses-its-subscriber-decline-and-its-shares-are-up-14)-only stories and exclusive live videos, as well as the subscriber badge. In India, there is currently no option for creators to set up an account to accept paid subscriptions. 'For the time being, Subscriptions will only be accessible in the United States,' an Instagram spokeswoman said, 'but we plan to expand Subscriptions to other regions shortly.'

Meanwhile, TikTok, a competitor, [recently announced](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/38510/name-the-european-bank-the-world-s-largest-multilateral-public-bank-which-recently-announced-to-invest-33-billion-rupees-450-million-euros-for-the-first-metro-line-in-lucknow) that it was working on premium memberships, which would allow producers on the video-sharing site to monetize their work. The tool will enhance the [opportunity](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12836/flexibility-and-opportunity-making-the-gig-economy-work-for-you) to tip TikTok producers while also allowing them to earn a consistent revenue. Last year, Twitter announced Super Follows, which allows users to share subscriber-only information with their Twitter followers, such as 'behind-the-scenes' content, early previews, and subscriber-only chats (for tweets).
