# Does DeepSeek API usage include R1 reasoning tokens in the total?

I’m monitoring token usage for calls to DeepSeek R1 and trying to understand what the API reports in its usage fields. Does `total_tokens` include the model’s reasoning tokens, or only the tokens visible in the final answer?

If the API exposes reasoning tokens separately, I’d appreciate an example of where to find that field in the response. I’m asking mainly so I can compare usage across requests accurately.
