# How does Grok choose between X search and web search?

When I ask Grok about something current, I sometimes see it refer to posts on X and other times to pages from the [wider web](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162432/can-grok-search-x-without-also-using-the-wider-web). I can’t tell whether it chooses between those sources automatically, or whether the wording of my prompt changes what it searches.

Is there a way to tell which search route Grok used for a particular answer? I’d be interested to hear how people phrase questions when they want coverage from one source rather than the other.
