# What happens to files I upload to ChatGPT after I delete a chat?

I sometimes upload documents to ChatGPT for a one-off question, then delete the conversation when I’m done. I’m not sure whether deleting the chat also removes the [uploaded file](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162436/do-claude-projects-pick-up-changes-when-i-replace-an-uploaded-file), or whether it can remain available somewhere else in my account.

Is there a separate file library or data setting I should check? I’d like to understand what deletion actually covers before uploading anything more sensitive.
