# Why do repeated Perplexity searches for the same query show different sources?

I’ve noticed that running the same question through Perplexity at different times can produce a different set of cited pages, even when I haven’t changed the wording. Sometimes the main answer shifts too; other times only the sources do.

Is that usually because the search index has changed, because the query is interpreted differently, or because the selected mode affects retrieval? I’m trying to work out how much variation to expect when I use it for research.
