# When Perplexity uses a custom date range, which date does it filter by?

When I narrow a Perplexity search to a **custom date range**, I’m not sure what the dates refer to. Does the range use the publication date shown by a source, the date Perplexity discovered or indexed the page, or something else? This matters when I’m researching a fast-moving topic and trying to separate recent reporting from older pages that have been updated.
