# Does Claude’s extended thinking use up the conversation context?

When I use extended thinking in Claude, does that internal reasoning take up space in the conversation’s context window, or is only the visible exchange counted?

I’m asking because [long chats](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117546/how-well-do-claude-project-instructions-hold-up-in-long-chats) can start to lose track of earlier details. I’d like to understand whether extended thinking contributes to that, and whether the answer differs between Claude in the app and the API.
