# Can Claude keep PDF footnote references intact when summarizing a document?

I’m using Claude to summarize research PDFs, and some of the useful context lives in footnotes rather than the main text. When the summary mentions a claim from one of those notes, can Claude preserve the footnote number or otherwise point back to it?

I’m trying to avoid a summary that reads well but makes it hard to trace a detail to the right place in the original document. Has anyone found a reliable way to ask for that?
