# How should I handle instructions embedded in documents I ask Claude to summarize?

I sometimes ask Claude to summarize reports or email threads that contain lines phrased like instructions—“ignore earlier directions,” for example. I want Claude to treat those as part of the document, not as directions for the conversation.

Is there a reliable way to frame this kind of request, especially when I’m processing documents I didn’t write? I’d be interested in prompt wording that works in practice, and whether the answer changes when the file is attached rather than pasted into the chat.
