# Can Claude read spreadsheet formulas, or only the values shown in cells?

I’m reviewing a workbook with Claude and need to know whether it can reason about the formulas themselves, not just the numbers currently displayed. For example, if a cell shows a total calculated with `SUM`, can Claude tell which cells feed into that total?

Has anyone tested this with uploaded Excel files? I’m curious whether formula handling changes between **.xlsx** files and exported CSVs, where the formulas are gone.
