# Why can the same image cost different amounts to process in the OpenAI API?

I’m trying to estimate API costs for a workflow that sends product photos for analysis. The image file itself doesn’t change, but I’ve seen image requests described in terms of detail level, resolution, or tiles rather than one simple fixed token amount.

How much can the image’s dimensions and the chosen detail setting affect usage? If you send the same image repeatedly, does the API treat its image input like reusable prompt text, or is it counted anew each time?
