# Why does Claude lose track of details in a long conversation?

In a long Claude chat, it sometimes seems to miss a decision or constraint we agreed on much earlier. The detail is still visible when I scroll back, so I’m not sure whether I’m running into a context limit, an output limit, or something else.

Has anyone found a reliable way to tell when **[a long Claude conversation](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162496/when-a-claude-conversation-gets-very-long-what-happens-to-earlier-details)** is losing earlier context? I’m especially interested in whether this differs between the regular chat interface and API use, and what signals to watch for before relying on old details.
