# How does Claude Code decide which files to include in a repository search?

When I ask Claude Code about a behavior in a fairly large repository, it sometimes finds the right files quickly and other times seems to miss a relevant module. I’m trying to understand how **Claude Code file search** works before I change my project layout or start adding extra instructions.

Does it rely mainly on filenames and search matches, or can repository configuration and ignored files affect what it sees? If you’ve noticed a reliable way to get it to inspect a particular folder, I’d love to hear about it.
