# What should Claude do when an MCP tool times out mid-task?

I’m testing Claude with an MCP server that occasionally takes a while to respond. If a tool call times out after the server has already started work, I’m not sure whether Claude will retry it, wait for another result, or carry on as if the call failed.

How are you handling **MCP tool timeouts** in practice? I’d especially like to hear how you avoid [duplicate actions](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162536/how-do-i-prevent-duplicate-actions-when-retrying-an-openai-tool-call) when a retry could submit the same request twice.
