# How well does Claude retain older details in a long conversation?

When a Claude conversation gets long, I sometimes need to refer back to a small decision made much earlier—an agreed naming convention, a constraint, or a detail from the original brief. I’m not sure whether missed details are caused by the conversation length or by how I’m asking.

For people using **[long Claude conversations](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/306979/the-hidden-mechanics-of-claudes-long-conversations-why-your-context-window-shrinks)**, have you found a practical point where it’s better to start a fresh chat and bring over a short recap? I’m curious how you keep earlier requirements available without repeatedly pasting the entire discussion.
