# How can I match OpenAI Batch API results to the requests I submitted?

I’m trying the OpenAI Batch API for a set of independent classification requests. The output file doesn’t appear to follow the same order as my input, so I’m unsure what the safest way is to connect each result back to the record that produced it.

Is the **custom_id field** the reliable identifier to use throughout the workflow, including for failed requests, or is there another detail I should account for when processing **[Batch API results](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162505/how-do-you-match-openai-batch-api-results-to-the-requests-that-created-them)**?
