# Does changing a Claude prompt invalidate its prompt cache?

I’m trying to understand Claude prompt caching before restructuring a long system prompt. If I edit a small section near the beginning, does that make the rest of the prompt a fresh cache entry too, or can an unchanged prefix still be reused?

For anyone who has tested this, what did you change and how did you tell whether the cache was being hit? I’m especially curious whether moving instructions around has a different effect from changing a few words.
