# Does the OpenAI Responses API carry context into a new request automatically?

I’m trying to understand what state the Responses API keeps between calls. If I send a fresh request without a `previous_response_id` and don’t include the earlier messages myself, should I expect the model to know anything about that conversation?

I’m especially curious whether there are differences between a new request in the same app session and a completely separate API call. How are others handling **conversation state between requests** without accidentally relying on context that isn’t there?
