# Does Claude Code’s plan mode inspect a whole repository before suggesting changes?

I’m trying Claude Code on a fairly old repository with a lot of dependencies between modules. Before it edits anything, I’d like it to understand how the relevant pieces fit together rather than make a plan from the first few files it finds.

When you use plan mode, does Claude Code build a broad picture of the repository, or mostly reason from files it has already opened? I’m curious whether people ask it to map specific directories first, especially in larger codebases.
