# Can I opt out of Grok using my X posts without losing public search?

I’m trying to make sense of the privacy controls around Grok and X. I’d like to limit whether my own posts or activity can be used to improve AI features, but I still want Grok to search public X posts when I ask about a current event.

Are those separate controls, or does opting out of data use also change what Grok can retrieve from public posts? The settings and wording seem easy to mix up, so I’d appreciate hearing what other users see in their accounts and which controls apply to **personal post data** versus **public X search**.
