# How well does Claude read tables in scanned PDFs?

I’m reviewing reports that were scanned from paper, so the tables are part of the page image rather than selectable text. Claude can usually summarize the surrounding paragraphs, but I’m less sure how much to trust it with dense tables, footnotes, and merged cells.

For anyone who has tested this: does it preserve row and column relationships, or does it tend to flatten the values into a vague summary? I’m especially interested in experiences with **[scanned PDF tables](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162379/can-claude-extract-scanned-pdf-tables-without-losing-their-structure)** where a small transcription error could change the meaning.
