# Does Perplexity run a fresh search on every follow-up question?

When I ask a follow-up in a Perplexity thread, I can’t always tell whether it has searched the web again or is mainly building on the earlier answer and its sources. That distinction matters when the topic is changing quickly.

How do you tell when a response includes **follow-up searches** rather than relying on the [conversation context](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162502/does-grok-keep-the-same-conversation-context-when-switching-between-text-and-voice)? If you ask it to check for newer information, does that consistently produce a fresh set of sources, or do you use a different workflow?
