# What should I test before pointing an OpenAI-compatible client at DeepSeek?

I have a client already configured for an [OpenAI-compatible endpoint](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162499/can-a-locally-served-deepseek-model-call-tools-through-an-openai-compatible-endpoint) and am considering using it with DeepSeek. I know changing the base URL and API key may be the easy part, but I’d rather not discover subtle incompatibilities in production.

For anyone who has made this switch, what did you check first? I’m especially curious about [streaming responses](https://answers.mindstick.com/blog/395/streaming-responses-from-an-llm-in-aspnet-core-real-time-ai-output-with-server-sent-events), error handling, and whether the returned usage fields match what your client expects.
