# When should I use Perplexity’s academic search for a technical question?

For [technical questions](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/162289/how-well-does-grok-handle-technical-questions-with-attached-screenshots), I’m not always sure whether Perplexity’s academic-focused search is a better choice than its regular web search. If I’m checking a claim about a software method or trying to understand a newer research result, what differences should I expect in the sources and the kind of answer?

Has anyone compared the modes on the same question? I’d be interested in examples where one found useful material that the other missed.
