# How do OpenAI API bills account for reasoning tokens?

I’m trying to estimate costs for a feature that uses a reasoning model, and the visible answer is only part of the response. How should I interpret the usage fields when **reasoning token billing** is involved? Are those tokens counted separately from the text the model returns, and what’s the best way to forecast spend before rolling this out to more users?
