# Can Grok trace an uploaded photo to its source, or only describe it?

Someone shared a cropped photo of a flooded street with a caption claiming it was taken this week. There’s no photographer credit or original link. I’d like to use Grok to investigate it, but identifying what a picture shows isn’t the same as establishing when and where it was published.

## What would count as a traceable match?

If I upload the image and ask for its origin, can Grok search for matching copies, or would it mainly use visible clues to search for related events? I’m looking for an earlier page containing the same photograph—not just an article about flooding in a similar-looking city.

Has anyone compared this with **[reverse image search](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/259266/use-reverse-image-search-to-check-who-stole-your-pictures)**, particularly for cropped or mirrored pictures? I’d also like to know how Grok distinguishes a verified match from an educated guess when reporting **image source verification** results.
